How a design job runs
Five steps. You can stop after any of them.
We walk the property together
I want to know how you use the space, where the sun hits in summer, what you hate about it now, and what has already died there. That last one tells me more than anything else.
I come back with a plan and a price
What goes where, what it costs, and what it will need from you once it is in. In writing, before anything is dug.
Plants chosen for this climate, not a catalogue
The Imperial Valley kills anything that was not picked for it. Everything I put in has to survive a real summer here without you nursing it.
Water planned in from the start
Where the irrigation runs is designed alongside the planting, not retrofitted afterwards. Retrofitting is how you end up with beds that never get watered properly.
Installed, then handed over properly
I plant it and I tell you exactly what it needs for the first season, which is the period where a new landscape is either made or lost.
Kept up afterwards, if you want
Plenty of people add regular lawn care or maintenance once the yard is in. Entirely optional, and not something I will push at you.

Worth knowing before you call, so nobody wastes a visit.
I am one person, not a design firm
You get sketches and a clear written plan, not architectural renderings or 3D models. If you need stamped drawings for a permit, that is a landscape architect’s job.

That is the work I do and the work this page is about.
Hardscape and structures, ask first
Walls, large concrete pours, decks, and anything electrical are not what I do. I will tell you straight rather than take it on badly.
Phased is fine
You do not have to do a whole yard at once. Plenty of people do the front this year and the back next, and it is often the smarter way to pay for it.
If the job needs someone I am not, I will say so at the estimate. That costs me a job and saves you a bad one.

Priced on the size of the area, how much has to come out first, how much planting goes in, and whether irrigation has to be run. Phased work is quoted phase by phase. Written price before I start.

Questions about landscape design
Do you draw up plans?
You get a clear written plan and sketches of what goes where, with the price attached. What you do not get is architectural renderings or stamped drawings, which is a landscape architect’s job rather than mine.
What plants actually survive here?
The ones picked for this climate rather than out of a catalogue. I will suggest options at the walkthrough based on how much sun your yard gets and how much water you want to spend on it.
Can I do it in stages?
Yes, and a lot of people do. Front yard this season, back yard next. It spreads the cost and it lets you see how the first part performs before committing to the rest.
Do you do walls, concrete, or lighting?
No. Planting, grading, and irrigation are my work. Hardscape, structures, and anything electrical are not, and I will tell you that rather than do a poor job of it.
Will you look after it once it is planted?
If you want. New planting is most vulnerable in its first season, so a lot of people keep me on for that stretch at least. It is optional and I will not push it.
